The role of extramaze cues in spontaneous alternation in a plus-maze.

چکیده

Performance on various spatial tasks is superior in the presence of extramaze cues that provide guidance in locating the goal. This study was an investigation of the effect of such cues on nonrewarded, continuous spontaneous alternation in a plus-maze, a spatial task with no explicit reinforcement. Rats were tested in five daily sessions. Alternation scores, which reflect how frequently the least recently visited arms are chosen, were calculated for each day. On the first day only, rats in the stimulus-rich condition, with cues added to the curtain that surrounded the maze, alternated more than did rats in the stimulus-poor condition. Over days, the stimulus-rich group showed a significant downward trend in alternation, whereas the stimulus-poor group showed an upward trend, but all the groups always alternated at levels greater than chance. Thus, although performance on this task can be enhanced by the presence of extramaze cues, other types of information support alternation.

An examination of the spatial working memory deficit following neurotoxic medial dorsal thalamic lesions in rats.

The present study examined the performance of rats with neurotoxic lesions centred in the thalamic nucleus medialis dorsalis on standard and modified versions of the eight arm radial maze test. In Experiment 1, the thalamic lesions produced a borderline deficit in acquisition of the standard task, but subsequently had no effect when a delay was interposed after the first four arms had been ente...

Otoconia-deficient mice show selective spatial deficits.

The vestibular system contributes to the performance of various spatial memory tasks, but few studies have attempted to disambiguate the roles of the semicircular canals and otolith organs in this performance. This study tested the otolithic contribution to spatial working and reference memory by evaluating the performance of otoconia-deficient tilted mice on a radial arm maze and a Barnes maze...

Neuropharmacological effects of standardized aqueous stem bark extract of Parkia biglobossa in Wistar rats

Objective: Parkia biglobossa stem bark decoction is a popular medicinal plant preparation used as calming agent for tensed patients in traditional medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of aqueous stem bark extract of Parkia biglobossa (AEPB) and its active fraction AEPBF3 on anxiety, spontaneous alternation behavior, and locomotor activity. The open field apparatus was use...

The Beneficial Effect of (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate in an Experimental Model of Alzheimer’s disease in Rat: a Behavioral Analysis

Progressive cognitive decline is one of the hallmark symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) which can be modeled by β-amyloid injection into specific regions of brain. Since epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a potent antioxidant agent which its role against oxidative stress and inflammation has been shown in prior studies, we tried to determine whether EGCG administration protects against β-am...

Entorhinal cortex lesions disrupt the transition between the use of intra- and extramaze cues for navigation in the water maze.

This study with rats examined the effects of excitotoxic lesions to the entorhinal cortex (EC) and hippocampus (HPC) on using extramaze and intramaze cues to navigate to a hidden platform in a water maze. HPC lesions resulted in a disruption to the use of extramaze cues, but not intramaze cues, whereas EC lesions had no effect on the use of these cues when they were encountered for the first ti...
